TODAY’S MUSE: Keep a Sketchbook

DAILY MUSE | If you don’t already, start keeping a sketchbook.

I’m a firm believer that creativity is a gift from God/ the creator/ the universe (whichever way one looks at it) and that ideas are gifted spontaneously. They come in spurts and streams. One has to be ready at anytime to receive them (capture them) when they come. And it’s the responsible and courteous thing to do when bestowed with such wonderful gifts. Consider your sketchbook entries as thank you notes to the universe acknowledging the creative source for the generous gifts.

I have kept sketchbooks all my adult life. I think the count is up to thirty. I fill them with whatever comes my way in inspiration: words, drawings, concepts, diagrams, poems, lyrics, inventions, to do lists, solutions to problems, etc. It’s quite interesting going through my collection of acquired ideas ever know and then. There are some real gems in there.

If you are and active person a good one is made by Moleskine— and they come in all sizes from small pocket-sized ones on up.

Musical Code Found in “DaVinci Code” Chapel

DAILY MUSE | Here’s an absolutely fascinating find. A father and son team studying the Rossyln Chapel in Scotland (made famous in “The DaVinci Code”) have found a code in geometric stone carvings inside the chapel from which they have decoded musical compositos. Check it out here and here. Quite beautiful!

Here is a physical demonstration of their theory used in deciphering the code.

TODAY’S MUSE: Martha Graham

DAILY MUSE | Today I offer an inspiring and powerful quote from dancer/choreographer Martha Graham. Use it today– and everyday– to champion your creativity.

There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening
that is translated through you into action
and because there is only one of you in all of time,
this expression is unique.
And if you block it, it will never exist
through any other medium and be lost.

What Jesus Meant

DAILY MUSE | I will add today this thoughtful conversation about Jesus and what he really meant by his ministry– a refreshing contrast to the constant blather we hear so often, particularly from the crazed fringes of Christianity which sadly have become more mainstream here in America. This intriguing and sane dialogue supports the general sense I see repeatedly played out– that by and large most Christians today are really missing the point. This particularly applies to those allied with the Christian conservative political aim and agenda, which all in all would make Jesus roll over in his grave (so to speak). Pray that sanity and reason and true compassion will embrace us all at last.

The conversation is the first segment (in the first 34 minutes)

TODAY’S MUSE: Take a Walk

DAILY MUSE | Go for a walk. I find that walking helps to quiet my mind, sort out and unwind from the stress or just the day. When I’m stuck in my life, I often take a walk to get unstuck- it opens up my creativity. Julia Cameron in The Artist’s Way suggests that going for a 20 minute walk everyday will “walk your creative child back to health”. Try it.

TODAY’S MUSE: Connect With A Creative Ally

DAILY MUSE | It’s easier to be creative in community– with creative allies who will give you the permission to show up as the creative genius that you are. As allies they’ll give you the space to reinvent yourself- or the space to just show up and be great. They’ll listen to and honor your ideas. They’ll mirror them back to you. Sometimes magnifying them and expanding them. The more you surround yourself with creative allies, the more permission you will have to show up as creatively.

List all the people you know. Who among them are your creative allies? Or have the potential to be one? Connect with one today. Now, in fact. Pick up the phone. Make a lunch appointment. Or a date to go to a museum. Or to a play. Honor your current creative allies. Reach out and cultivate new ones. And also look to see who you might be a creative ally for? Reach out to that person. Be generous with them. Create and give them the space to just be great in.

THE SUNDAY SERVING: The Elegant Universe

DAILY MUSE | Sorry everyone. Work got the best of me this week, so my posts dwindled. Here’s to a new week!

This week’s Sunday Serving is The Elegant Universe, a NOVA documentary based on Brian Greene’s book of the same name. It offers a comprehensive (and surprisingly understandable) explanation of String Theory which may hold the possibility of meeting Einstein’s dream of a single theory explaining the workings of the entire universe– a Unified Theory– a Theory of Everything.

Artists, writers, musicians, philosophers– in fact everyone– can benefit from the creative possibilities of dwelling in this kind of thought.
